FRIEND OF YOUTH
THE SANDY OPTIMIST CLUB
2009 - 2010

WHAT IS THE OPTIMIST CLUB?
- A men’s and women’s service club made up of a group of concerned adults representing a cross section of the community who recognize their civic responsibilities and join together voluntarily in thought and action for the good of the community.
- Similar to "Big Brothers" in philosophy but with a wider, more general scope rather than the "one on one" style.
- No religious or political affiliations.

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE OPTIMIST CLUB?
- Started in Buffalo New York in 1911 with the slogan "FRIEND OF THE DELINQUENT BOY".
- First Canadian Club...Toronto, Ont. in 1924...that year the slogan changed to "FRIEND OF BOY".
- Slogan changed again in 1972 to "FRIEND OF YOUTH"

TODAY...over 4,300 clubs in U.S.A. & CANADA  as well as many other nations...over 170,000 members...annual budget of over $14,000,000 to sponsor and run over 50,000 YOUTH & COMMUNITY PROJECTS ANNUALLY.
- Over 9,000 projects to raise the funds.
- Serves over 5 million young people annually.
- Has provided over $3,000,000 to other "people-helping organizations.

WHAT IS THE OPTIMIST CLUB PHILOSOPHY OR PURPOSE?
- to develop OPTIMISM as a philosophy of life.
- to promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs.
- to inspire respect for law.
- to promote patriotism.
- to work for international accord and friendship among all people and,
- to aid and encourage the development of youth in the belief that the giving of one's self in service to others will advance the well being of man, his community, and the world.

HOW OFTEN DOES THE SANDY CLUB MEET?
- We meet once a week on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the SANDY COMMUNITY CENTER.

WHAT GOES ON AT A MEETING?
- Generally the meetings feature good fellowship and stimulating and interesting programs...GUEST SPEAKERS - club business is kept to a minimum.  Most club business is conducted at Board Meetings which are open to all members.  Board Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  The last meeting of each month is dedicated to the members’ family and we have a potluck dinner.  The whole family is urged to attend.

WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
- To serve the community and youth effectively we must have able dedicated members...members of standing with good character and an interest in serving the community...members with a variety of ideas and talents...men and women with a high level of morality and integrity...men and women of all vocations.

HOW DOES ONE BECOME A MEMBER?
- By invitation of a club member to attend one of our meetings as a GUEST...after seeing who we are and what we are doing, the guest may express an interest in joining us...after which his or her application will be considered by the members and he or she will be invited to join, according to the decision of the members.

WHAT IS THE SANDY CLUB INVOLVED IN?
Youth Appreciation Week - Oratorical & Essay Contests - Performing & Fine Arts ($1000) Scholarship - Math & Science ($500) Scholarship – Anna Mae Carr Memorial Scholarship ($500) - The Pat Wolf Memorial Scholarship ($500) - O.I. Foundation - Community Service - Youth Activities - Family Christmas Baskets.  FUND RAISERS:  Sandy Mtn. Festival - Christmas Tree Lot - Spring Plant Sale - Oktoberfest – Optimist Cookbook sales.

CLUB HONORS ETC.
- Honor Club - 1986-'87, 1987-'88, 1988-'89, 1989-'90, 1990-'91, 1993-'94, 1996-’97, 1998-’99, 1999-00, 2001-‘02; Distinguished Club - 1989-'90; District Achievement Award - 1987-'88, 1989-'90, 1996-‘97 - Friend of Youth Award - 1987 to 2005, District Project Winner - 1986-'87 - O.I. Foundation Pledge Award 1983 to 2009.  The SANDY OPTIMIST CLUB will celebrate its 30th Anniversary.  In 30 years the club has raised & spent approximately $220,000 for the Youth of our community with less than 50 members. We are proud of our past accomplishments but, WE NEED YOU AS A MEMBER, to continue on with bigger & better achievements in the future.
